Advance Your Career…
Tips From Placement Experts

Legal placement companies like Ad Hoc are paid by their clients to find, recruit, and place candidates according to their needs.  When working with our search consultants, ask for advice.  Our placement team is extremely experienced and can help you easily understand the placement process.  They will guide you through each step by providing advice and recommendations.  Pay careful attention to the suggestions and techniques your placement director gives you…they will pay off in spades!

A good legal placement director will be available to you whenever you need to discuss your job search.  The recruiter is counting on your reciprocity in that regard when he or she presents you to a client.  It is essential that you can be reached in a timely fashion and that you return phone calls and e-mails quickly.  After all interviews with a client, you should call your placement director to discuss your interest in the position.  A late response to a client following an interview may send a negative or confusing message.

You should be fully candid with your recruiter.  You should supply him or her with complete and accurate information regarding your compensation and employment status.  If your employment status changes, you should immediately inform the recruiter.  If you choose to work with more than one legal placement company, avoid being presented to the same prospective employer by more than one recruiter.  Always insist that every placement company obtains your express permission to send your resume for specific opportunities.  Never, never give blanket permission to a company to send your resume without first discussing the prospective job with you.  Ultimately, you will appear unorganized to a prospective employer if you allow multiple recruiters to indiscriminately distribute your resume.

Often a placement company will not acknowledge the receipt of an unsolicited resume, but will contact you if your experience and skills fit a client’s needs for a particular assignment.  At Ad Hoc, we always respond to candidates from whom we receive a resume.  While we may not have an appropriate position for you at the time we receive your resume, we want to stay in touch with you.  Equally as important, we want you to stay in touch with us.

The development and maintenance of your relationship with a respected legal placement company like Ad Hoc can help you reach your long-term career goals.  Stay informed and stay in touch, and you’ll soon find yourself moving up the career ladder.
