References…More and More
Important in the Hiring Process

In addition to conducting criminal background checks and educational verification, Ad Hoc checks references of all candidates whom we present to our clients.  Here are a few important thoughts about submitting references to an employer.

Do not include references on your resume. Instead, prepare a separate list of references that can be furnished at the request of a prospective employer.  The list should include only references that can be contacted immediately.  Provide the reference’s name, company address, e-mail address, telephone number, and your relationship (i.e., supervisor, peer, or professor.)  Always check with those you would like to use as references to ensure they are willing to serve in that capacity.  If you do not want a reference called until after an offer is made, then you should indicate such on your list.

More and more, prospective employers want to see as references supervisors from your last three employment positions.  In addition to former supervisors, you can use peers as references to round out your list.  Make sure to note peer references as such, and that your relationships to these persons are clear to a prospective employer.  Professors may be used as references but should only be used if you have recently graduated and have little or no employment history.

Keep your list of references current, and stay in touch with everyone on the list.  The most successful candidates remain in close contact with these valuable resources…often for many years throughout their careers.  After all, what is more impressive than a set of former supervisors who sing your praises?
