Temporary Employees Aid Exxon
in Bringing Global Litigation

To some, it would have been the litigator's logistical nightmare. A simple insurance coverage lawsuit filed by Exxon Company USA in Baton Rouge had turned into a piece of "global litigation," in which Exxon sought to recover pollution remediation costs expended between 1943 and 1986. The smaller suit was folded into the larger one, which involves more than 3,000 sites. The global litigation, styled Exxon Corporation, Exxon Pipeline Company and Ancon Insurance Company, Inc. v. Insurance Company of North America, et al., was filed in August 1995 in San Francisco County Superior Court.

After hiring outside counsel from San Francisco, Exxon took on the role of handling the mass discovery which accompanies such large-scale litigation. As such, the requirement for attorneys, paralegals, secretaries and other legal department personnel multiplied many times over, creating a logistical problem for those working on the case.
